What is VIP? AYSO’s programs allow every child to enjoy the benefits of soccer, regardless of ability or circumstances, and to get the utmost benefit at every level from beginner to expert. Very Important Player (“VIP”) VIP is a special program exclusively for players facing special mental and/or physical challenges. The program has special rule allowances so more children can enjoy the benefits of AYSO soccer. VIP teams may include children who are blind, amputees, mentally challenged, autistic, and children with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, or other conditions that impair mobility, strength, and/or comprehension. VIP programs operate within the existing structure of a Region, just like a Division. VIP integrates its players with the rest of AYSO by using “Buddies” from other teams (or siblings, AYSO Volunteers, etc.) to help the players both on and off the field if needed. VIP helps more than just the players. Buddies and other volunteers increase their appreciation and understanding of individuals with special needs. They find their lives greatly enriched by their involvement with their new VIP friends. Community Service Hours are offered to high school students for their active participation as VIP Buddies. Teams are made up of as few as five players, and may be coed. VIP teams are balanced like other AYSO teams, with players rated by physical ability, size, and age. Unlike other Divisions in AYSO, the VIP Program does not have an upper age limit so players are able to participate in the game of soccer as long as they may desire. For parents who may have thought they would never see their mentally and/or physically challenged child(ren) play a sport or make new friends, VIP gives them joy and hope. They are able to relax and enjoy watching their child(ren) having fun like other children involved in AYSO. Our goals for every participating player include, but are not limited to: · Understand the fundamentals of the game · Learn teamwork and fair play · Increase positive self-esteem · Become more physically fit · Meet and be comfortable with new people · HAVE FUN!!!
